John Starrett III served in the U.S. Army as a Sergeant with Company D, 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division during the Vietnam War. He was killed in action on October 4, 1970, in Binh Thuy Province, South Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Oak Leaf Cluster, AIr Medal and Purple Heart.
