Robert Trotter served in the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant Junior Grade during World War II. A pilot stationed on a gasoline tanker, he died on September 14, 1945, when his PB4Y-2 Privateer crashed at Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands 12 days after the formal surrender of Japan.
